چکیده

ITG and ETG turbulence is investigated with the nonlinear global PIC code ORB5. The large variety of numerical schemes and simulations domains used has sometimes lead to important discrepancies in the transport predictions. In order to discuss these disagreements, emphasis must be put on ways to check the numerical accuracy, such as energy conservation and numerical noise measurement. This paper therefore presents benchmarks, new algorithms and a noise diagnostic [1]. After having demonstrated the numerical quality of our simulations, 2 topics are visited: the unclear role of the parallel nonlinearity [4, 5] and the transport level in ETG turbulence, for which predictions differing by one order of magnitude had been made elsewhere [2, 3].

Particle-in-Cell Simulations with Kinetic Electrons

A new scheme, based on an exact separation between adiabatic and nonadiabatic electron responses, for particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of drift-type modes is presented. The (linear and nonlinear) elliptic equations for the scalar fields are solved using a multigrid solver. The new scheme yields linear growth rates in excellent agreement with theory and it is shown to conserve energy well into...

Ion Propulsion Simulations Using Parallel Supercomputer

A parallel, three-dimensional electrostatic PIC code is developed for largescale electric propulsion simulations using parallel supercomputers. Two algorithms are implemented in the code, a standard finite-difference (FD) PIC and a newly developed immersed-finite-element (IFE) PIC. The IFE-PIC is designed to handle complex boundary conditions accurately while maintaining the computational speed...

Kinetic effects in stimulated Brillouin scattering

The role of ion and electron kinetic effects in the nonlinear evolution of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is investigated by means of particle-in-cell numerical simulations. The simulations were carried out in one and two spatial dimensions (1D and 2D), with a full PIC code, in which both ions and electrons are kinetic. The full PIC simulations are compared with those obtained from a hyb...

Modelling of Electron and Ion Dynamics in the Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source by Means of Pic-self Consistent Numerical Simulations*

The properties of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) plasmas, up to now, have been largely studied on the basis of a global approach. However the design of new generation sources, able to provide high intensity beams of multiply charged ions, requires a more accurate investigation of both electron and ion dynamics. Recent experiments have demonstrated that even slight frequency’s ...

Pic Code Simulations of Collective Effects in the Space- Charge-dominated Beam of the University of Maryland Electron Ring (umer)

Numerical simulation using particle-in-cell codes is a powerful tool in understanding the nonlinear dynamics of space-charge-dominated beams. The University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) will explore the transport of beams with intensity previously inaccessible to circular machines. The ring will also function as a testbed for accelerator codes. Applications such as heavy ion fusion and coll...
